Yarn Shops in the Syracuse Area

For some reason, I was under the impression that there were no (are at least, very few) yarn shops in the Syracuse area. When I think back to when I was a knitting-noob I remember trying to find yarn shops and somehow, not really succeeding. And then I found sites like Knitpicks and Elann and realized I can buy yarn on the internet for pretty cheap when I was ready to expand my horizons to other things besides acrylic. So, my interest in LYSs quickly faded. But now I’m curious about this LYS thing even though I know it might be the pricier option. But have I not proven my commitment to knitting and honed my skills to justify spending more money on yarn? And these LYSs surely have sales, right? And what about helpful, friendly staff? Surely that counts for something. And wouldn’t it be grand to know exactly what color your yarn is when you buy it instead of rolling the dice when you order online?

And shouldn’t I be supporting local businesses in this, the age of WalMart?

For those of you who are local and are interested in yarn shops, here is a list I found using Almighty Google. Some of these places have websites, some don’t. Where possible I fished out their hours of operation. I’m pleased to see there is a place, The Knitting Connection, on the other side of town from me. Perhaps I'll check that out in the near future.

Village Yarn shop is no longer there, in Dewitt OR Fayetteville. When I moved to NY in early 2005 I went looking for it and it was gone.
Rumor has it that Elegant Needles is opening a store in Fayetteville (I think)
And there is also Mission Rose Quiltery in N. Syracuse which is worth visiting.

I've been to all of them except Mission Rose and A Yarn for all Seasons. In fact, I worked at Elegant Needles for a few years when I was in college. Nice shop, very nice yarns.
The Yarn Bin is basically just someone's house, I can't even really remember the last time I was there. Patchwork plus is nice too. They have a nice little section of yarns and what they carry is good.

At the beginning of January 2008, a new yarn store called Sheep Thrills opened in North Syracuse on Route 11. It's a great store with friendly staff. If you are yarn shopping in Syracuse, stop by. Also, check out the CNY Knitting Guild, Twisted Stitches at tsocny.typepad.com. Happy knitting!!

I drove there on Saturday but Elegant Needles store not at 7 Jordan. At bakery next door they said it never re-opened. They'd had a big clearing out sale which the owner told me was so they could remodel and expand the store, but I guess it never happened. Too bad, it was a nice little store.

FYI... A Yarn for ALl Seasons went out of business. Elegant Needles no longer has a web site or email address to contact the owner. There is a new yarn store that opened quite recently in Shoppingtown Mall. They specialize in wool and dyeing the yarn. I have been to Sheep Thrills and love the store. There is supposed to be a yarn shop in Elbridge that is quite nice. Maybe this summer I will wander out that way.

My name is Becky Halliday and I am with WomenHeart - the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. WomenHeart is the only peer-to-peer support group for women with heart disease. Yes, I am a heart attack survivor. I had a heart attack at the age of 40. I was healthy and had no symptoms of heart disease. Because of this terrifying experience, I decided to become trained to offer support groups to other women like me. WomenHeart of Central New York will be holding their very first meeting (open house) on July 30 and plan to have 2-3 meetings a month thereafter.

One of the things we do for our new members, is give them a Red Bag of Courage when they come to their first meeting. These bags have information regarding heart disease and each bag also contains a HeartScarf. Each scarf is offered to comfort, support and encourage women with heart disease. Recipients of the scarves truly feel the love and attention that go into the production of these hand-made scarves. University hospital has also asked WomenHeart for 50 Red Bags of Courage per month to distribute to their female heart patients. We hope to get the other hospitals’ participation as well.

We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to knit or crochet these scarves. Scarves are always red and measure 3-4 inches wide and 50-60 inches in length. After the scarves are created, I sew a WomenHeart tag onto each one. Some of the volunteers also attach a personal note to their scarf. If you have anyone in your organization that is willing to help, I can provide them with the yarn, or they can use their own as a donation. Either way is fine with me. I can also provide you with a knitted and a crocheted pattern, or you can be creative and use your own pattern.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact me bhalliday@twcny.rr.com. Thank you!
